Sony sees LCD TV sales increase on year; expects profits from Ultra HD TVs

Sony has announced thats its sales and operating revenues during the first quarter of fiscal 2013 were US$17.3 billion, an increase of 13% compared to the same quarter of the previous fiscal year. This increase was primarily due to the favorable impact of foreign exchange rates, an increase in financial service revenues, and an increase in unit sales of smartphones. On a constant currency basis, sales decreased 3% on year. This decrease was primarily due to the absence of the sales from the chemical products related business, as well as a decrease in sales of video cameras and compact digital cameras, the company added.
Sony added that its operating income increased US$367 million in the first quarter. This improvement was primarily due to a significant improvement in the Mobile Products & Communications segment as well as the favorable impact of foreign exchange rates.
In terms of the TV segment, sales increased 18.2% on year to US$1.87 billion. Operating income of US$53 million was recorded, compared with an operating loss of US$66.76 million in the same quarter of the previous fiscal year. This improvement was primarily due to an improved product mix in LCD TVs and cost reductions, partially offset by a significant decrease in unit sales of LCD TVs on year.
Meanwhile, market observers expect Sony's LCD TV shipments to reach 15 million in 2013 and also believe that the company will be able to rake in profits from the TV segment due to Ultra HD TV sales.
