VW集團在Strategy 2018的計畫推動之下，希望能在2018年之前將全集團達到全球銷售1000萬輛、同時成為全球最大汽車集團的目標。儘管這項挑戰被視為是不可能的任務，但VW集團卻是連年交出亮麗的成績，在2012年更已經將全球銷售規模提升至超過900萬輛的水準，距離最終目標的達成就只差一步之遙而已，有許多的分析師甚至認為不出兩年VW集團便應有陸續超越GM、TOYOTA集團、問鼎全球車壇霸主的機會。
