儘管紐約五大區有超過11萬支消防栓，但不開車的人多半想不起來家裡附近哪裡有，開車的人也常因為沒看見，停在消防栓15呎內，吃下115美元（約新台幣3452元）的罰單。

原因很簡單，因為紐約的消防栓矮矮小小、鐵鐵灰灰的，一點都不起眼，也常被整理好等回收的垃圾、大樹、積雪給掩蓋，讓用路人眼裡很難容得下消防栓。

由於抱怨的民眾實在太多，紐約市議員多次提案要求重新為消防栓上漆，或是在消防栓附近掛上三角椎、加設其他明顯物品，提高消防栓的能見度，讓用路人不會再被「蒙蔽」，也能提高救火效率。（詳細內容請參閱全球中央雜誌6月號）1030629
